Firefighter Safety We are the most technically advanced nation in the free world but yet we have not been able to reduce the number of firefighter fatalities over the years. Its one of the great mysteries of the world today. Our gear is better than what they wore thirty years ago, its better than what they wore ten years ago and we still lose an average of one hundred firefighters every year. I know that not all are dying in structure fires but just one is one too many. Today we have many of our guys who like to push the envelop. Our gear is the best and it will protect us in any kind of conditions. But is still has limits. You may be protected from the heat and fire to an extent but you can only go as far as the SCBA will let†¦show more content†¦They are â€Å"gun-hoe† on an interior attack without giving it some strategic thought first. They put their men into situations where they are extremely exposed when the only life safety concern is to the firefighters themselves. It is an unconscious tactical command with little thought or regard for its necessity. The result often is that firefighters are continually killed in highly exposed conditions under very questionable circumstances. Today’s building construction also lends itself into the deaths of firefighters. We see everyday about building collapsing in on our guys while they are fighting fire. The builders and engineers are always coming up with lighter materials and cheaper ways to make things to save them money on construction to boost their bottom lines with out due regard for safety to others especially firefighters. A light weight wood frame truss will fail under fire conditions in a little as five to eight minutes. Given the time that the fire is discovered and called into dispatch, the time they have to turn the call around and dispatch units, one minute to get enroute, and if they can get on scene within five minutes, another couple of minutes to pull hose lines and enter the bu ilding, your are on the threshold of a roof collapse. Then we also put guys on the roof to ventilate thus weakening the roof even more. My Family Is Not The Typical Caucasian Family Dynamic

As with any family, ours is not the typical Caucasian family dynamic. We began with my husband as the traditional breadwinner while I was finishing my college education. It was planned that we both would be working in careers before we discovered I was pregnancy with our first son. Three months later my spouse would suffer a great tragedy and was no longer able to walk, much less work. I would have to take on the role of not only breadwinner, but also caregiver and mother within the next year. Giving Bad Advice Essay My cousin Madison turned 14 years old last year and I visit her, my aunt and uncle on a weekly basis. I like it there better because, like myself, they would rather take a trip to the beautiful mountains to ski, or go to the beach to catch big waves rather than stay home watching T. V. As a kid, my family traveled whenever they got the chance because my mom worked for a travel agency and received great discounts. Our family took trips to great places such as beautiful San Francisco and Las Vegas. When the economy plummeted, my parents lost their jobs and couldn’t afford to anymore. My Dad hates to spend money so we don’t go anywhere that revolves around that subject. My Aunt loves to take vacations which is something that is always enjoyable because being at home can get quite boring. The down side of going over my Aunts house is that my little cousin and I bicker and argue constantly because she seems to always think she’s right and that the world is all sunshine and rainbows. We do get along most of the time and but have our moments from time to time and that is a fact of life, I don’t mind dealing with it when I have to. This past year we traveled to many places, such as Universal Studios and the beach, but since it’s the time of year where the beautiful white snow we love comes falling down from those great big snow clouds, we took a trip to the mountains and went skiing. Skiing is one of our favorite things to do when winter comes around. I am getting better at it every year we go. My Dad taught me how to ski as a kid and since then I have been skiing as long as I can remember. On the way to Massanutten ski resort, my excitement was as high as it could be since we haven’t been in years. My cousin Madison is still a beginner and doesn’t like to listen to anyone who tries to give her advice on how to get better and eventually go to the bigger slopes. She always skied with her Dad because he likes to go down the easy and slow hills with her and lets her do her thing without him talking and messing up her focus. The greater and lengthier slopes are a lot more exciting than the bunny hills so I tried to convince Madison to go with us to the bigger hills. She knew that she could do it but the fear grew inside her head. It was very hard and frustrating to get her to overcome her fear. When Madison finally decided to face her fear and come over to the bigger slopes, we all went up on the lift to the top. At the top she seemed a little scared but she had everyone there with her assuring she would be safe and sound. We started skiing down and it appeared as if she forgot everything she was taught. She fell over and her skis came off and she seemed shaken up about it. I skied down to her and tried to give her the best advice possible on how to get up, put the skis on and the best route to take the rest of the way down the slope. Since she didn’t like to listen to anyone that isn’t a ski instructor, so she wouldn’t get up the way I taught her to.
